Atopic eczema, more commonly known as atopic dermatitis, is a modern skin problem affecting both infants and children, as well as adults. It has a chronic course and is manifested by inflammatory changes leading to severe itching, which affects the quality of life. Infants diagnosed with atopic dermatitis are predisposed to the development of the so-called “atopic march”, which is expressed in the development of allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma in later childhood.
Violation of the barrier function leads to increased water loss and facilitates the penetration of allergens and bacteria, resulting in areas with dry skin and multiple inflamed areas.
How to take care of the skin with atopic dermatitis?
- Atopic skin care should start from early childhood;
- The key is the regular use of emollients (skin care and moisturizing products) – 2–3 times a day, and the right choice of hygiene products is also important;
- Gentle cleansing and regular, effective moisturizing of the skin to strengthen its protective barrier leads to an increase in the intervals between the phases of exacerbation (periods of remission);
- Hygienic products should also be adapted to the specific needs of atopic skin – with good skin tolerance, physiological pH, and fragrance-free. A short shower is recommended, avoiding using too hot water;
- The emollient should be applied immediately after washing, it is even recommended to apply it on wet skin.
- Proper use of care products is also important. It is recommended to apply the product evenly and with clean hands after each shower, and if necessary, several times a day. The choice of an emollient is of great importance – in addition to the active substances that affect the symptoms, it is recommended that the emollient be sterile, i.e. it should not contain flavorings and preservatives (or ingredients that mimic preservatives). Care products from the Xera Calm AD series are part of the sterile cosmetics of the French dermo-cosmetic brand Avene. Their special packaging has a patented hermetic sealing system that guarantees the safety of the formulation, without the risk of contamination throughout the entire period of use.
- Texture also matters — it should be chosen individually for the skin type and current condition, with mild to moderate dryness, a lighter texture is assumed, and with severe dryness, it is better to use emollients with a rich texture.
- The sun dries the skin even more, so limited exposure is recommended, especially during the hours of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest. In addition, protective clothing should be used and a product with an appropriate sun protection factor should be used.
What characterizes sterile cosmetics?
- Packaging of emollients allows you to exclude preservatives or substances with a similar effect without the risk of contamination of the formula;
- Tolerance, even for the most sensitive skin, maximum preservation of the properties of the ingredients of the product;
- Maximalist and quality on texture.
